Bespoke Metalwork
CNC Jaali Designs for Railings, Gates & Partitions (2026 Ideas)
The jaali — a perforated screen — is one of the oldest ideas in Indian architecture, and CNC and laser-cutting have made it one of the most versatile tools in modern home design. A single cut-metal pattern can become a staircase railing, a main gate, a facade screen, a room partition or a pooja-room backdrop. This guide covers the design directions we see most in 2026 and how a bespoke jaali is actually made.
Where a CNC jaali works in a home
Because the pattern is cut from sheet metal to any size, the same design language can run through a whole house:
- Staircase railings & balustrades — a cut-metal infill panel instead of vertical balusters, for a continuous decorative screen.
- Main gates & compound gates — laser-cut panels that read as solid from the street but stay light to operate.
- Facade & elevation screens — sun-shading jaali over windows and balconies that doubles as the building's signature.
- Interior partitions & room dividers — freestanding or fixed screens that separate spaces without closing them off.
- Balcony & window grills — security that looks designed rather than defensive.
- Pooja room & feature walls — backlit jaali for a warm, patterned glow.
Design directions for 2026
Four families of pattern dominate current projects:
| Style | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Geometric & Islamic | Repeating stars, hexagons, interlaced lines | Gates, facades, formal railings |
| Botanical & floral | Vines, leaves, lotus, peacock motifs | Partitions, pooja rooms, feature walls |
| Contemporary abstract | Gradient perforations, parametric flows | Modern facades, dividers |
| Heritage Mughal jaali | Fine lattice, jaali-within-jaali | Restoration, luxury interiors |
Choosing the metal and finish
The pattern is only half the decision; the metal sets the cost, durability and feel.
- Mild steel (MS) — most economical, powder-coated in any colour; the workhorse for gates and grills.
- Corten / weathering steel — a rich rusted patina for facades and garden screens.
- Stainless steel — corrosion-resistant for exteriors and coastal sites.
- Brass — the premium choice for interior jaali and luxury railings, with a warmth no coating can imitate. It is where a lighting-and-metal house like ours is most at home.
Finishes range from powder coat (any RAL colour) to antique brass, brushed, blackened, and clear-lacquered raw metal. Our factory does cutting, fabrication and in-house paint and finishing under one roof, which keeps colour and quality consistent from panel to panel.
How a bespoke jaali is made
A typical commission runs: design or motif selection → CAD drawing to your exact opening size → CNC/laser cutting of the sheet → fabrication and framing → finishing → site installation. Because everything is cut to file, a motif can be scaled, mirrored or repeated across gate, railing and screen so the whole property shares one visual language.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CNC and laser-cut jaali? Both cut a pattern from sheet metal to a digital file; laser cutting gives very fine, clean edges on thinner sheets, while CNC (including plasma/router) suits thicker stock and larger work. We select the method to suit the metal and detail.
Can one design be used for both the gate and the railing? Yes — that is the advantage of file-based cutting, and it is one of the most requested things we do.
Is brass jaali suitable outdoors? Brass is best for interiors and covered areas; for open exteriors we usually recommend stainless or powder-coated steel and reserve brass for the pieces people see up close.
