Choosing the metal: aluminium, steel, iron or wood

A main gate lives outdoors, so the material choice is as much about weather, weight and operation as looks:

• Car / driveway gate: 10–12 ft clear opening for a single car; 14–16 ft for two cars or an SUV-friendly turn.
• Pedestrian gate: 3–3.5 ft wide is comfortable for a person and everyday use.
• Height: 5–6 ft is typical; go to 7 ft or add a solid lower panel where privacy and security matter.
• Sliding gates need a clear wall run beside the opening at least as long as the gate itself to park into.
